Learn about our Technology and Operations Centre

At Enbridge Gas Distribution, safety is our ongoing priority.  We’re committed to the safety of our workers, customers and the public. Part of that commitment is ensuring our workers have the training they need to do their jobs safely.

In October 2012, we opened the doors to a state-of-the art Technology and Operations Centre in Markham, Ontario. Our 105,000 square foot facility brings our practical and theoretical training programs together under one roof.  It serves as the central hub for the training of hundreds of workers.

This comprehensive approach to training allows us to further develop our workers' expertise, and in turn continually improve our ability to deliver natural gas to you safely and reliably.

The Streetscape

The hallmark of the Centre is an innovative "streetscape" where workers are trained on real-life, adaptable situations in a controlled environment. It’s the most comprehensive and realistic training facility for a natural gas utility in Canada.

The 1.5 acre streetscape consists of infrastructure common in an urban community, including:

  • A natural gas distribution system
  • Full-sized roads
  • Scaled-down buildings, which represent residential, commercial and small industrial customer premises

Environmental Design

In keeping with Enbridge’s long-standing commitment to sustainability, the Centre was designed to meet Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) gold level designation.

Some features include:

  • Solar panels to heat the building’s water
  • Light Emitting Diode (LED) lighting throughout
  • Thermally efficient roof, walls and windows
  • Low-profile indoor furniture for optimal access to daylight
  • Rain water is collected for landscape irrigation

When compared to a facility of similar use built to building code standards, the Centre has been designed to:

  • Consume 78% less natural gas
  • Consume 68% less electricity
  • Consume 50% less water
  • Produce 50% less waste
