As an evolving energy company, we are uniquely positioned to help transition Ontario to a lower-carbon future.

Renewable natural gas (RNG), a proven type of green gas, is a carbon-neutral, sustainable fuel that is created from decomposing organic waste. This waste can come from many different sources including landfills, wastewater treatment plants, farms, and residential organic waste. RNG could be produced in Ontario and put into our existing natural gas system. It is compatible with all natural gas appliances.

RNG has the same environmental benefits as renewable electricity and helps reduce your greenhouse gas emissions by displacing traditional natural gas. RNG development represents an innovative way for Ontarians to turn a waste product into a useful energy source and lower greenhouse gas emissions at the same time.

Many jurisdictions are ahead of Ontario in moving to renewable natural gas, and several models exist for delivering it to customers. British Columbia’s model, for example, gives Fortis customers the option to buy RNG as some or all of the gas they use. Customers there who choose RNG also receive a carbon tax credit on their bill.

Significant RNG Milestones:

  • 2012: Germany operates over 80 RNG facilities and over 100 RNG vehicle refueling stations
  • 2013: Quebec’s BFI Canada launched largest RNG transformation project in Canada
  • 2014: California Gas utilities develop RNG facilities under state’s “Directed Biogas” program
  • 2015: The City of Hamilton (Ontario) produces RNG from its municipal wastewater treatment plant and then injects it into the City’s natural gas distribution system.
  • 2016: 15 US States and 3 Canadian provinces are currently operating over 35 RNG facilities
