Information for municipalities and those providing drain clearing services

There is a potential safety issue that could arise if you attempt to clear blocked sewer service lines beyond the outside walls of buildings.

It is possible that natural gas lines installed using trenchless practices may have inadvertently penetrated sewer service lines. Unless the natural gas line is damaged, it does not pose an immediate safety risk. However, the risk of damaging a natural gas line could arise when attempting to clear blocked sewer service lines beyond the outside walls of buildings.

Damaging a natural gas line that has penetrated a sewer service line could result in a leak, posing an immediate safety risk.

For your safety and that of your employees and others, Enbridge Gas Distribution urges everyone, including plumbers, municipal sewer operators, property managers and property owners, to obtain a free Natural Gas Sewer Safety Inspection from Ontario One Call at 1-800-400-2255 before attempting to clear the sewer service line with any rotating or water jetting (flushing) sewer/drain clearing equipment. There is an option within Ontario One Call's phone system that is specific to calls regarding a "sewer service line blockage."

An Enbridge representative will attend the address within two hours or at a later mutually scheduled time to perform the inspection to determine whether or not a natural gas line may have inadvertently penetrated the sewer service line.

As an alternative to calling Ontario One Call, drain service providers can perform a complete, clear video inspection of the sewer service line to rule out the presence of a natural gas line before using any rotating or water jetting (flushing) equipment. The video must be conclusive and clearly show that there is no natural gas line in the sewer before any rotating or water jetting equipment is used. However, if the presence of a natural gas line cannot be ruled out, anyone planning to use rotating or water jetting equipment should call Ontario One Call for a free Natural Gas Sewer Safety Inspection.
