Saving around your home
The age, condition and efficiency of your appliances play a big role in how much energy you use, so it’s important to keep them in good working order. You may also want to consider upgrading to the most energy-efficient models.
Basement
Washer and dryer: Use the warm or cold settings on your washer instead of hot for significant energy savings. Let clothes air-dry when possible. It will help your clothes last longer and will save you money.
Water tank: Consider choosing a tankless natural gas water heater when you upgrade your water heater. It only heats water as needed.
Furnace: Replace or clean your filter every three months to keep your furnace efficient. The less it has to work, the more money you save.
Furnace trouble?
Enbridge Gas doesn't repair furnaces, boilers or water heaters. For furnace repairs and maintenance, please contact a qualified HVAC contractor. Find a contractor near you at the Heating, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Institute of Canada (HRAI).
Bathroom
Showerhead: Installing energy-efficient showerheads and taking shorter showers can make a big difference. The average shower is eight minutes - try limiting yours to six minutes.
Bedroom
Window: Seal cracks and drafts with caulking or weather stripping to help reduce heat loss.
Living room
Fireplace: Keep the damper of wood-burning fireplaces closed to prevent cold air from coming into your house. Consider a natural gas fireplace which is clean and more efficient.
Thermostat: Turn down the heat! Try setting your thermostat at 20°C (68°F) during the day and 17°C (62.6°F) at night.
Kitchen
Small appliances: Use small appliances like your toaster, which use less energy than your stove.
Dishwasher: Only use the dishwasher for full loads and use the energy saving cycle.
Oven: Turn off the oven a few minutes before cooking time is over; the heat will finish the job.
Faucet: Fix leaky taps, especially hot water. One drop/second for a month equals sixteen hot baths.
Exterior
Exterior of house: Seal all cracks, holes, or gaps in the exterior of your house to prevent heat loss.
Trees: Planting trees on the south and west sides of house can draw shade and help lower the temperature of your home.
