Hurricanes, severe weather and flooding
Atlantic hurricane season runs from June through November every year, but severe weather can impact North Carolina anytime. With natural gas, service is not typically interrupted because Enbridge Gas’ infrastructure is underground. However, there are times where severe flooding, erosion and downed trees can cause harm to your gas appliances and our natural gas system.
Know what to do when a storm is approaching and how to respond if your service is interrupted.
Before the storm
- Ensure your contact information is up to date. You can sign into your account and update your contact information in the event Enbridge Gas needs to get in touch with you.
- Consider following Enbridge Gas on X (formerly Twitter), Facebook or Instagram for updates.
- If high winds are expected, secure lawn furniture or other heavy yard items. These items can potentially damage your natural gas meter or regulator if they are blown around by strong winds.
- Preparation is key. Visit ReadyNC.gov for best practices to help you be storm ready.
During
- Only Enbridge Gas or emergency personnel should turn off natural gas at the meter.
- If you are concerned that flooding could cause a pilot light to be extinguished, you can turn off the appliance at the supply valve. Please note that you will need to use a qualified contractor to relight the pilot light.
After
- If you turn off the appliance or any of your appliances become submerged in water, do not try to relight your pilot. Use a qualified contractor to inspect your appliance and relight the pilot light.
- If you detect a gas leak or there is a broken or exposed gas line, leave the area immediately, warn others to stay away and, from a safe place, call Enbridge Gas at 877-776-2427 and call 911. Know the signs of a gas leak.
- Depending on the severity of the storm, response times will vary in impacted areas. Emergencies will be prioritized.
- Once flood waters have receded and the area is deemed safe, Enbridge Gas will inspect and repair your meter and regulator set if required at no charge.
- Before removing fallen trees or debris, contact 811 to identify the location of underground utility lines, as they may be entangled in tree roots or hidden beneath the surface.
