A security deposit may be required if:
- You are a new customer.
- You have not paid your entire bill or payment plan amount by the due date should the required payment include a previous balance.
- You have unpaid final balances from past accounts.
- You have not established a good credit history and have more than one disconnection notice for nonpayment within the past 12 months.
- You had service shut off for nonpayment.
- You are in bankruptcy.
- You have been involved with unauthorized usage of gas, theft of service or meter tampering.
How is the amount of the security deposit calculated?
- The amount of the security deposit is calculated at 1.3 times the budget amount for the property. The budget amount is estimated future gas averaged monthly over a year.
Security deposit billing
- Security deposits are billed in three, equal, consecutive monthly installments.
Security deposit refunds
- Residential security deposits will be reviewed for refund after one year and business deposits after two years of timely, in-full, consecutive payments.
- A 3% rate of interest is paid if the full security deposit is held for 180 days or longer.
Options to avoid paying a cash security deposit
A residential customer may:
- Request a guarantor agreement from Enbridge Gas Ohio
Submit your request using the Customer Care request form. Select “Other” in the drop-down and include “Guarantor Agreement” in the description. - Credit reference letter
- Only available to first time residential accounts.
- Letter must be received from another natural gas or electric utility.
- Letter must include that customer had residential service for a minimum of 12 consecutive months and maintained a good payment history.

- Provide an Irrevocable Letter of Credit.
Surety bond
Enbridge Gas Ohio holds this document in lieu of a cash security deposit to protect the Company against loss resulting from unpaid service bills by business customers. The minimum dollar amount for this application is $500.00.
It's very important that the information on the Surety Bond is correct and complete. Otherwise, we cannot honor it in lieu of a cash security deposit. The Surety bond remains in effect for two years.

Irrevocable Letter of Credit
Enbridge Gas Ohio holds this document in lieu of a cash security deposit to protect the company against loss resulting from unpaid service bills by nonresidential customers.
An irrevocable letter of credit is one that can only be modified by the beneficiary (in this case, Enbridge Gas Ohio). The minimum dollar amount for this application is $500.00.
It's very important that the information on the irrevocable letter of credit is correct and complete. Otherwise, we cannot honor it in lieu of a cash security deposit.
The irrevocable letter of credit remains in effect for two years.
When submitting the irrevocable letter of credit form:
- The form must be printed on the issuing financial institution's letterhead bearing its name and address.
- The form must contain an issuing number for the letter of credit.
- The irrevocable letter of credit must be signed by an officer of the financial institution.
- The Enbridge Gas Ohio company that provides your utility service should be listed as the beneficiary with the address of: 915 N. Eldridge Parkway, Suite 1100, Houston, Texas 77079.
- The dollar amount of the irrevocable letter of credit must be equal to the amount of security deposit requested.
- The name on the irrevocable letter of credit must be the same name as it appears on your Enbridge Gas Ohio account.
- Your business must be registered to do business in the state in which you receive service from us. Accordingly, this business, which Enbridge Gas Ohio recognizes as its customer, must be the owner or the bonafide lessee of the property that receives the service and must register to do business in the state if it is not.
