Once we receive regulatory approval for the project from the Utah Public Service Commission, construction and installation of natural gas mainlines will begin mid-2027 with completion in the late fall of 2027.

With the mainlines in place, service techs will begin connecting homes to the service lines.

Generally, natural gas costs less than propane. In fact, the average Enbridge Gas residential customer’s annual costs are one third of comparable residential propane customer costs in Utah.

Here’s some math to show the monthly breakdown. Enbridge Gas Utah, Wyoming, and Idaho customers currently pay $9.21 per dekatherm (the unit of measurement for natural gas usage) with a basic monthly service fee of $6.75. By comparison, propane currently costs $2.34 per gallon, which is equal to $25.54 per dekatherm (1 dekatherm of natural gas equals roughly 10 gallons of propane).

That will depend largely on how much natural gas is used, but based on current rates, the typical Enbridge Gas residential customer in Utah will pay about $725 per year.

This annual cost includes both general rate costs plus the cost of natural gas. General rate costs are expenses for the services used to provide natural gas service to customers, such as maintaining the system. The cost of gas is passed through to customers with no markup.

That will depend to some degree on what work needs to take place inside the customer’s home.

While the cost to convert fuel lines or appliances within the home will vary and are covered by the customer, to help keep new gas connection costs down, a law passed in 2018 by the Utah State Legislature to ensure all costs associated with new connections are shared across all Enbridge Gas Utah customers.

Variability in customer costs will depend largely on what appliances, if any, need to be converted or replaced, and what other contractor services are required within the customer’s home.

In many cases, existing propane appliances can be converted to operate on natural gas rather than replaced. Whether a conversion is possible depends on the specific appliance model.

If an appliance can be converted, the cost of the conversion is the customer’s responsibility and must be completed and properly adjusted by a qualified contractor to ensure safe operation. However, if a propane appliance cannot be converted, it will need to be replaced with a natural gas appliance.
