Enbridge Gas Files an Application for 2025 Deferral and Variance Account Clearing
On July 30, 2026, Enbridge Gas filed its 2025 Utility Earnings and Disposition of Deferral and Variance Account Balances Application with the Ontario Energy Board (OEB) (EB-2026-0108). The application seeks approval to dispose of certain 2025 deferral and variance account balances and addresses 2025 utility earnings across the EGD and Union rate zones. This application does not include Demand Side Management (DSM) deferral and variance accounts, which Enbridge Gas addresses through a separate application.
If approved as filed, the account clearing will result in a one-time adjustment being applied to a future bill of all customers. Enbridge Gas has proposed to dispose of the approved 2025 deferral and variance account balances with the first QRAM application following the OEB's approval.
The filing also includes an Earnings Sharing Mechanism (ESM) amount. In 2025, Enbridge Gas's actual utility earnings exceeded the OEB-approved return on equity threshold, resulting in a proposed earnings sharing amount to be credited to customers in accordance with the OEB-approved methodology.
What are Deferral and Variance Accounts?
Deferral and variance accounts are used to capture certain differences between Enbridge Gas’ forecast amounts approved for collection through rates and actual revenues and costs collected or incurred. The differences are either refunded to customers or collected from customers, upon approval by the OEB, and are specifically allocated to each rate class.
How to estimate the 2025 Deferral Adjustment
You can estimate your proposed 2025 deferral adjustment by multiplying the proposed rate adjustment that applies to your service (shown below) by the actual volume of natural gas you consumed in 2025.
