Waste Connections of Canada, with support from Enbridge Gas, is proposing to create a new renewable natural gas (RNG) facility at the Ridge Landfill, near the community of Blenheim in Chatham-Kent, Ontario.

Through an investment of over $70 million in Chatham-Kent, the proposed Ridge RNG facility will capture landfill gas generated by decomposing waste and transform it into carbon-neutral RNG, which will be injected into the natural gas distribution system that supplies gas to homes and businesses. Approximately 110,000 tonnes of greenhouse gases (GHG) emissions per year will be offset, which is equivalent to taking almost 24,000 passenger vehicles off the road.

Enbridge Gas’ experienced pipeline contractors will use many local resources to build the facility and related pipeline. It is estimated that the RNG facility would create close to 50 development and construction jobs as well as several highly skilled permanent operational jobs.

The Ridge Landfill RNG facility will be comprised of an upgrading and compression system to upgrade landfill gas to an RNG quality that is suitable for injection into the Enbridge Gas natural gas network.

The proposed project includes:

  • Construction of a new Enbridge Gas RNG injection station at the Ridge Landfill site. This facility will be comprised of an upgrading and compression system to convert landfill gas to high-quality renewable natural gas.
  • Construction of a new 4-inch diameter, 5.7 km pipeline that will run from Enbridge Gas’ Chatham East Line at Blenheim North Station to the new injection station.

The Ridge Landfill is owned and operated by Waste Connections of Canada. The landfill receives solid non-hazardous industrial, commercial, and institutional waste from southern and central Ontario as well as residential waste from Chatham-Kent.

On April 6, 2023, the Ontario Energy Board (OEB) issued its Decision and Order approving Enbridge Gas’ Leave to Construct application for this project. Construction on this project started July 10, 2023.
