Hamilton-based ArcelorMittal Dofasco (AMD) is starting a multi-phase plan to achieve net-zero emissions in its steelmaking. Phasing out coal-fired steelmaking operations is one example of how they’re planning to significantly reduce their carbon footprint by 2028, along with implementing a new direct reduced iron electric arc furnace (DRI-EAF) process.

Replacing coal with natural gas provides an immediate and significant reduction in GHG emissions for energy-intensive industrial processes, like steelmaking, that cannot be practically electrified. Natural gas also offers a practical bridge to net zero emissions when combined with other near-term and longer-term alternatives. Beginning in early 2025 and ending in late 2025, Enbridge Gas proposes to build natural gas pipelines in the City of Hamilton to meet AMD’s requirements.

In addition, here is a look ahead at other ways Enbridge Gas will be working together with industries to help achieve net-zero emissions.

The anticipated project cost is not available yet since the project is still in its early planning stages. Enbridge Gas will file a Leave to Construct application for this project with the Ontario Energy Board, and approval of this application is required before the project can proceed. If approved, the pipeline would be constructed by Enbridge Gas and its contractors.
