Enhancing Reliability Through Storage

Enbridge Gas is building a liquified natural gas (LNG) storage facility in Person County, North Carolina to enhance natural gas service reliability for residential and business customers in the growing region. Enbridge Gas studied several potential sites, and an array of data was collected during the site selection process, including but not limited to, construction feasibility, minimizing landowner impacts, connection to our existing natural gas system and avoiding environmentally sensitive areas. Construction began in early 2024 and the facility is anticipated to be in service in 2027.

Water Hauling: Frequently Asked Questions

The test involves using large quantities of water to test the structural integrity of the tank that will be used to hold liquified natural gas (LNG) for storage.

Approximately 16 million gallons of water are required for the test.

Enbridge Gas carefully evaluated several options for sourcing water and considered feedback from nearby residents. Using local well water was not preferred by neighboring residents, and installing a water line would have required construction affecting several hundred property owners. Given these considerations, trucking water to the site was identified as the most appropriate approach, as its impacts are temporary and limited in duration.

Enbridge Gas is managing traffic and safety through a staggered delivery schedule, the use of signage where necessary, and coordination with county Emergency Management Services and first responders.

Water hauling will take place in stages from late June through July. It is expected to start in the fourth week of June with weekday operations (Monday through Friday), running about 12 hours per day for about five days. In the second and third weeks of July, weekday operations will continue with similar 12-hour shifts for about a week and a half. Then, during the fourth and fifth weeks of July, operations will shift to continuous, 24/7 trucking for approximately 10 days.

Dates may change slightly depending on site readiness and operational conditions. See the water hauling trucking route.

In addition to using the contact form to reach the project team, Enbridge Gas is hosting an information session on Thursday, May 14, from 5–7 p.m. at Piedmont Community College (Building S, Room 100).
