Before natural gas is piped to your house, a chemical called mercaptan is added to make it smell like sulfur or rotten eggs. If you suddenly smell rotten eggs or hear the hissing sound of escaping gas, it could be a natural gas leak, ACT FAST by doing the following:
Do not use phones, switches, or electronics. Do not smoke.
Do not turn lights or appliances on or off, or start a vehicle nearby.
Do not search for or repair the leak—leave it to professionals.
Do not stay inside—leave immediately.
Do not keep doors and windows closed—gas can build up quickly.
If gas is burning, call 911—do not try to put out the fire.
You may notice one or more of the following:
Smell of rotten eggs or sulfur
Damaged or loose connections on gas appliances
Hissing or whistling sounds near your meter, pipes, or appliances
Dead or dying plants/grass near a gas line
Carbon monoxide alarms detect unsafe levels of carbon monoxide (CO)—not natural gas leaks. Learn the signs of CO poisoning to stay safe.
Maintain your gas appliances regularly and have them checked annually by a licensed professional to ensure safe, efficient operation.
