Get up to $4,500 for a hybrid heating system through the Clean Home Heating Initiative

Enbridge Gas, with the support and funding from the Government of Ontario, is excited to announce the expansion the Clean Home Heating Initiative to include homeowners in Ajax, Barrie, Pickering, and Whitby after the successful rollout of the initiative last year in Sault Ste. Marie, St. Catharines, Peterborough, and London. With this expansion, Enbridge Gas customers who are homeowners in any of the eight eligible municipalities will be able to get up to $4,500 towards installing an electric heat pump.

An electric heat pump with smart controls is paired with a condensing natural gas furnace to make a hybrid heating system. The system switches between energy sources to cool and heat your home as efficiently as possible, helping to reduce energy costs and your carbon footprint. Your home will be cooled efficiently by the heat pump during the summer and will keep you warm during winter months.

The Clean Home Heating Initiative is a collaboration between Enbridge Gas and the Government of Ontario. Funds for the Initiative along with the customer financial incentives are provided by the Government of Ontario from the 2023-2024 Budget.

Saving energy is just one of the benefits

Space heating accounts for more than 60 percent of the energy use in the average Canadian home.* A hybrid heating system with smart controls switches between electricity and natural gas to heat and cool more efficiently to reduce emissions, optimize energy use and reduce long term costs.

One

Easy and convenient

Smart controls automatically switch between natural gas and electric heat, based on which source is the most efficient at a given time.

Two

Gain more resilience

With two heating systems, homeowners always have energy-cost resiliency and the option to heat with natural gas or electric heat.

Three

Heat more efficiently

By optimizing the home’s energy mix based on the source that’s a reliable and cost effective, energy costs are reduced over the long term.

4

Lower carbon footprint

Hybrid systems reduce greenhouse gas emissions by as much as 30 percent so homeowners will also be taking action on climate change.

How does hybrid heating keep energy costs low?

Hybrid heating uses two systems to heat as efficiently as possible. An electric air-source heat pump will heat the home when temperatures are moderate and electricity rates are low. When temperatures are cooler, or at times when electricity rates are at their peak, the system automatically switches to the condensing natural gas furnace, ensuring comfort on cold winter days. The home will also be cooled efficiently by the heat pump.

During the summer:

The air-source heat pump draws heat from inside the home and moves it outside, cooling more efficiently than an old air conditioner.

During the spring, fall and winter:

The air-source heat pump draws heat from outside and moves it indoors. If it gets too cold outside, the condensing natural gas furnace will automatically kick in to provide backup heat.

“The installation went very smoothly… They were here for a day and then they set everything up. They handled all the paperwork and a cheque showed up from the program. The house is much more even in temperature.”

Get up to $4,500 in incentives for an electric air-source heat pump

You are not planning to apply or accept any federal, provincial, municipal, and or utility rebates and/or incentives that are directly related to the supply or installation of heat pumps at their address. You can apply for or accept rebates for installing other energy-efficient HVAC technologies, which are not covered under the Clean Home Heating Initiative.

Ready to get started?

The Clean Home Heating Initiative is delivered by select participating HVAC contractors in your municipality. They will guide you through the process and confirm your eligibility. Once you are comfortable with the quote provided by the participating HVAC contractor, they will install the air source heat pump and work with you to submit a rebate application to Enbridge Gas on your behalf. You will receive your incentive cheque of approximately $3,000 to $4,500 in the mail depending on the type of air-source heat pump installed. This process may take up to 90 days after your application has been submitted and approved.
