Free energy upgrades for homes in need

The Home Winterproofing Program can help you lower your natural gas bill and make your home more comfortable. If your home and household income levels qualify, you’ll get free insulation, draft proofing and a smart thermostat to reduce energy costs up to 30%.

“I’m a pensioner and I budget very carefully.”

Built nearly fifty years ago, Rosemary’s Brampton, Ontario home was drafty and cold especially around the electrical outlets in the wall and windows. Rosemary signed up for the Home Winterproofing Program and received a home energy assessment and energy-efficient upgrades, including insulation, draft proofing and a smart thermostat. Now her home is much warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer. Best of all? She didn’t pay a thing.

How the program works

See if your home qualifies

Apply online or by phone at 1-844-770-3148. We work with authorized delivery agents across Ontario who will contact you with a few follow-up questions.

They'll ask for proof of income, such as a benefit statement or other supporting documents pertaining to your last tax assessment. This will be kept confidential.

Schedule a quick home visit

An authorized delivery agent will visit your home to check whether it’s properly insulated, or if air is escaping through windows and doors. This home energy assessment usually takes about two hours.

Free, professional installation

If we find that your home is eligible for free upgrades, our qualified contractors will install them at your convenience. It’s quick and clean, and there’s no cost to you.

Follow-up home visit

The same delivery agent will visit you again to make sure everything’s working properly and to answer any follow-up questions.

Frequently asked questions

Why is this program free?

We offer a range of conservation programs that help Ontarians save energy and money. By helping income-qualified households reduce energy use, we’re not only doing our part in the fight against climate change, but helping to keep natural gas affordable for all with less wear-and-tear on our infrastructure.

What makes my home eligible for upgrades?

Only homes that need energy-saving upgrades will receive them. Older homes tend to have insufficient insulation and more potential to save energy. If your home energy assessment uncovers that your home is well-insulated, it won’t be eligible for free upgrades.

If I rent my home, can I still qualify for upgrades?

Yes, if you qualify, you will also need written permission from your landlord before we can install the upgrades.

What documents do I need to provide as proof of income?

We’ll need the most recent Notice of Assessment for all household members over the age of 18 (please black out your social insurance number before sending). If you participate in a government assistance program, you can send your Benefit Statement instead.

Are your delivery agents and contractors authorized?

We work with delivery agents across Ontario to offer this program. They are authorized to work with you every step of the way and are available to answer any questions throughout the process.

Agents authorized to deliver this program:
Postal codes starting with K – EnviroCentre

How many visits can I expect?

We’ll need to schedule at least three visits: the first, to assess whether your home needs energy-saving upgrades; the second, to install the upgrades; and a final follow-up visit.

If my home is heated with a gas fireplace, can I still qualify?

Yes, you may qualify if your natural gas fireplace is the primary heat source for your home.

I don’t meet the income criteria—can I still apply?

Unfortunately, we limit participants to those who fit within the stated income criteria. Please check back as the income criteria changes from year to year. You may also qualify for other rebates and programs.
