On Nov. 28, 2023, Enbridge Gas made the difficult decision to halt construction on the Selwyn Community Expansion project as a result of ongoing regulatory challenges.

Enbridge Gas filed our Leave to Construct (LTC) application for this project in January 2023, and though we received approval on Sept. 21, 2023, the Ontario Energy Board (OEB) has elected to hear an additional motion by an environmental advocacy organization. This process could take up to 60 days and could change the approval to proceed with this work. These additional steps and extended timelines create uncertainty, all for intervenor motions that in our view are outside the intent of the Natural Gas Expansion Program.

With the Leave to Construct approval now at risk, Enbridge Gas has an obligation to protect our shareholders and existing customers and will cease construction until the OEB’s process concludes and all appeal periods have expired.

Enbridge Gas remains committed to ensuring that homes, businesses, and local and Indigenous communities can access reliable, cost-effective natural gas under Phase Two of Ontario’s Natural Gas Expansion Program (NGEP) they have been waiting for.

To show your support and share your concerns, please reach out to the OEB at 1-877-632-2727, by email at Registrar@oeb.ca or by submitting a letter to:

Selwyn residents will soon be able benefit from access to a cost-effective and reliable energy source for their homes and businesses.

The Selwyn Community Expansion Project enables Enbridge Gas Inc. (Enbridge Gas) to provide natural gas to the Township of Selwyn. This project is funded by approximately $1.7 million from the Ontario Government.

The Project involves the following:

  • Construction of approximately 1.8 km of Nominal Pipe Size (“NPS”) 2 high pressure polyethylene (“HPPE”) natural gas pipeline, and
  • Constructions of approximately 6.6 km of NPS 4 HPPE natural gas pipeline
  • Tie in to NPS 4” HPPE system at Eighth Line Smith and Selwyn Rd.

This project is currently under construction, and you may notice equipment in operation, and some noise. We apologize for any inconvenience this might cause. This work is being conducted by Enbridge Gas employees, or contractors working on our behalf. All employees and contractors carry identification at all times.
