At Enbridge Gas, we understand that your life takes energy. We don't make the big holiday meal or deliver the hot water for your shower — our job is to provide the energy that makes those things possible.

Benefits of converting to natural gas

Natural gas is a convenient, safe alternative to other types of fuels. You’ll have more peace of mind knowing you and your family have a reliable energy source. Homeowners are switching to natural gas because it’s:

  • Cost-effective: You can save hundreds of dollars each month by switching to natural gas.
  • Convenient: Since natural gas comes from a pipeline underground, you don’t need to replace it. Instead of checking meters and requesting a delivery of natural gas, you have access to it through a meter in your home. You can have peace of mind instead of wondering when you need to replace your energy supply.
  • Safe: Natural gas is considered safe to use, provided you use it appropriately and follow the recommended safety precautions.
  • Reliable: Natural gas provides peace of mind to you and your family about the comfort and efficiency of your home. Even during a power outage or storm, you can heat your home, cook food, and more.

When you're ready to convert your home and enjoy the comforts, efficiencies and savings of natural gas every day, we're here for you. See the steps below to understand what you need to do, what we handle for you and what to expect along the way.

How does natural gas get to your home?

Connect to natural gas in your home

If you're thinking about making the switch, you've come to the right place. We’re here to help get gas to you. Wondering what's involved in switching to natural gas?

Number one icon

Get in touch with a local heating contractor

  • Your heating contractor will work with us to confirm that there is natural gas close by, recommend the best system for your home and apply for a new gas service on your behalf.
  • You can find contractors online using the Heating, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Institute of Canada (HRAI) dealer locator, the Technical Standards and Safety Authority (TSSA) contractor locator or the Yellow Pages. We recommend you get multiple quotes from TSSA-registered heading contractors.
  • You can verify that the heating contractor is registered by calling the TSSA at 1-877-682-8772 and selecting option four.

Set up your new Enbridge Gas account

Once your heating contractor has submitted an application, we will email you a link to setup your Enbridge Gas account.

You must set up your Enbridge Gas account in order to move forward in the process.

Underground services will be located and marked

  • This is a critical step. For your safety, natural gas service will not be installed until Enbridge Gas or one of our authorized contracted partners contacts you.
  • A meeting will be scheduled to locate and mark all existing underground services.
  • Access to the inside of your home will be needed to ensure your new gas line won't interfere with your sewer connection.

After we receive your application, we need approximately six to eight weeks to install the gas service. Extreme weather, unusual construction conditions, or delays getting permits or locates could extend this timeframe. In areas that have less pipeline growth or are outside of our core zones, this timeline could be extended to 10 weeks or more. Please view remote locations to see if your location is in one of these zones. We will contact you when we are ready to install your service.

Underground gas service will be installed

  • Enbridge Gas or one of our authorized contracted partners will come to your home with a construction crew to install your new gas line.
  • If any lawn or topsoil needs to be restored after installation, this will be scheduled when weather conditions permit.

New equipment will be installed, gas meter activated and safety inspection completed

  • Your heating contractor will make an appointment to install your new equipment and remove the old equipment.
  • At the same appointment, your contractor will arrange for your meter to be installed and activated.
  • Your new equipment will be turned on and, in accordance with the Technical Standards and Safety Act, we will then conduct a safety inspection.

Other important information to know

  • Do not disconnect your fuel source or remove any equipment until after your new natural gas service has been installed and the appointment for your meter activation has been booked.
  • Be aware that depending on your location, construction may cease during winter months. We will hold your request until the following construction season and review the cost, if any, when we update our pricing in the spring.
  • Connection charges
We will install a residential natural gas line of up to 30 metres in pipe length at no charge. This distance is measured from the gas meter to the property line, following the path the pipe takes through the ground. Depending on the meter location we may not be able to take the most direct route. If the installed pipe is longer than 30 metres, the excess length will be charged at a rate of $45 per metre (plus HST). There is also a one-time $35 connection fee to open your account, a $21 monthly fee and we may ask for a security deposit. These charges will be applied to your Enbridge Gas bill.
  • Replacement Charges (if applicable)
Properties that were previously serviced by Union Gas where the natural gas service line has been abandoned are subject to Replacement Charges of $80 per metre (plus HST).

Complete the Natural Gas Inquiry Form

  • To inquire if there is natural gas on your street or if you are interested in having natural gas extended to your area, you must complete the natural gas inquiry form. Please ensure all critical information is provided so we can expedite your request.

Number two icon

Receive a high-level cost estimate from Enbridge Gas

  • Based on the information provided in the Inquiry Form, we'll confirm whether or not it is feasible to extend natural gas service to your area, and if it is feasible, we'll email you an estimate.
  • This estimate will show the minimum cost to provide you with natural gas. It can be influenced by a number of unknown factors at this point; things such as water or highway crossings, permits, soil and construction conditions, etc., could substantially increase the cost.
  • The estimate will be based on the rates that apply during the current construction season.
  • An expansion surcharge may apply once your project is evaluated.

Please note this estimate only covers the cost to extend natural gas to your street. To find out the cost of switching your home and equipment to natural gas, speak with a TSSA-registered heating contractor. See below for more details.

Number three icon

Confirm that you'd like to proceed

  • If the estimated cost is acceptable and you would like to proceed, please reply to the email you received and indicate that you accept the costs.
  • Please note that this confirmation does not bind you and no fees are required at this step.
  • If you have neighbours located between your home and the natural gas connection, and they also choose to connect to natural gas, you could reduce your costs by sharing the cost of bringing natural gas to your street. If they're interested, tell them to complete an Inquiry Form using the reference number emailed to you in Step 2.

Enbridge Gas will further investigate project feasibility

  • Your inquiry will be forwarded to the local construction office. You will receive a confirmation email within one week. This is just an acknowledgement and does not mean that your inquiry has been approved.
  • We will finalize the feasibility and cost of your inquiry. The time needed for this step depends on the specific requirements of your project. We may contact you and book a visit to your property to further investigate the cost and timeframe of the project.

Number five icon

Receive your detailed and/or final cost estimate from Enbridge Gas

  • Our local construction office will email you the detailed and/or final cost estimate required to bring natural gas to the front of your home on your street.
  • The cost to bring natural gas to your street will be shared by all interested parties.
  • If the length of the installed pipe to bring natural gas from your street to your home is more than 30 metres, there is an additional charge of $45 per metre (plus HST).
  • There is a one-time $35 connection fee to open your account, a $22.50 monthly fee, which will be applied to your bill.

Number six icon

Provide your final confirmation

  • If the cost estimate is acceptable and you'd like to proceed, please reply to the email from Step 5 and indicate that you accept.
  • Enbridge Gas may then need to collect an "aid to construction" financial contribution before the project can start. Depending on the area, you may need to agree to an expansion surcharge.
  • If your final confirmation comes in later than August 1, we may have to recalculate your project cost next year, as we may not install gas mains during the winter season.

Contact both your TSSA-registered heating contractor and Enbridge Gas

  • Upon hiring a heating contractor, provide them with the inquiry reference number that we included in the inquiry e-mails we sent you. This will ensure that your service inquiry is linked to your project.
  • Your heating contractor will apply on your behalf to connect your home to the gas main coming to your street.
  • Once your contractor has applied on your behalf, open your gas account with Enbridge Gas

You must set up your Enbridge Gas account in order to receive gas service.

Payment of financial contribution ("aid to construction")

Find out the cost of switching your home and equipment to natural gas

Speak with a TSSA-registered heating contractor

  • A heating contractor can recommend the best system for your home and provide you with an estimate of the cost to convert your equipment to natural gas. Keep in mind that you should not hire a contractor to begin work in your home until you've completed >Step 6 with Enbridge Gas.
  • If you have electric baseboard heating, installing ductwork would increase your overall conversion cost. Consult a Technical Standards and Safety Authority (TSSA) registered heating contractor to help you determine an accurate cost.
  • We recommend you get multiple quotes from the TSSA-registered heating contractors for installing and piping new natural gas equipment.
  • You can find contractors online using the Heating, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Institute of Canada (HRAI) dealer locator, the TSSA contractor locator or the Yellow Pages. You can verify that the contractor is registered by calling the TSSA at 1-877-682-8772 option four.
